With the project implemented in Tekirdağ by Namık Kemal University (NKÜ) and industry in collaboration, hydrogen production has begun without carbon monoxide gas coming out of factory chimneys mixing with the atmosphere. Stating that the hydrogen obtained with the project implemented to contribute to the green energy transformation of the region can be used in fuel and electricity production in industrial facilities, Çorlu Engineering Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer said, “By producing hydrogen, we compensate and support the energy needed by the factory with green energy.”
‘THE USE OF COAL WAS CAUSING AIR POLLUTION’
Dean of Çorlu Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer said that with the project, the toxic gas released from factory chimneys will be converted into hydrogen before it can escape into the atmosphere and will be used in fuel and electricity production. Tecer, who touched on the importance of the project carried out with university-industry cooperation, said, “We are obtaining hydrogen that can be used as fuel with the technology developed from carbon monoxide pollutants released from factory chimneys, especially from the chimneys of coal-burning facilities. Recently, there has been a difficulty in competition in industrial facilities operating in our region, especially due to the increase in natural gas prices, and the use of coal as an alternative was causing intense air pollution in this region. As a result of the research we conducted in order to find a solution to this problem of this region, we signed a consortium and a protocol with a technology company and a local production company as our university. We are providing system supervision and consultancy for this project. Therefore, today, we are starting our search for a technological solution to the problems caused by natural gas use and air pollution in this region with this project.”
‘WE ARE CONVERTING CARBON MONOXIDE GAS INTO GREEN ENERGY’
Tecer, who stated that they converted the carbon monoxide gas coming out of the chimney into hydrogen gas that can be used as fuel within the scope of the project, said, “When we spray water on this carbon monoxide gas with specially developed catalysts at high temperatures, it turns into carbon dioxide, and hydrogen gas is also obtained and released. The innovation here is that this hydrogen gas must reach a purity level of 99 percent in order to be used as fuel. We provide this with the hydrogen filter membranes developed by this technology company. We have been following the system for a long time and we saw it as a solution in order to contribute to the green energy transformation of this region, to reduce air pollution and to the competitive conditions abroad and abroad, and we put it forward. As of today, we will have started our projects in this sense in this region.”
‘WE ARE PREVENTING TOXIC AIR POLLUTANTS BEFORE THEY ARE EMITTED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE’
Prof. Dr. Tecer, expressing that the project is important for the industrialists and the region, said, “Especially in this region, the carbon monoxide concentrations coming out of the chimneys of textile companies and coal-burning textile companies are at an average level of 50-150 mg/cubic meter. As you know, carbon monoxide is a significant air pollutant, it has a poisonous effect. When we add this air pollutant carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and water with this system, we convert it into hydrogen, and in this sense, we prevent a toxic air pollutant from being released from the chimney into the atmosphere. In addition, by producing hydrogen, we compensate and support the energy needed by the factory with green energy, hydrogen energy. The cost of this system is 1/3 lower than conventional fuel systems, especially natural gas and coal. If the electrical energy to be used here is obtained from solar power plants or solar energy systems, this cost will also decrease by 1/4.”
