Celal Toprak, Editor-in-Chief of Business World Magazine in Turkey

The meeting of the new issue of the magazine and the ‘Digital Economy Summit’ program started with a speech by Celal Toprak, Editor-in-Chief of Business World Magazine in Turkey. Stating that economies that do not become digital have no future, Toprak said; “The new issue of the magazine includes topics related to digitalization and technology. We have undertaken a mission to bring together the business world and start-ups. We believe that building this bridge is an important issue for the Turkish economy. We aim to contribute to the development of the business world. There will be no economies that are not digital in the future. We must ensure awareness of this. If we can become digital in every area of life, we will have entered a different path. The business world has embraced our magazine, we have filled a gap in the business world with our magazine.”

BTM General Manager İbrahim Elbaşı

After Celal Toprak, the host BTM General Manager İbrahim Elbaşı took the podium and spoke about the transformation and future issues and said the following; “It is very meaningful for us that a magazine organizes an event themed on transformation and the future right after its launch and that we host it. Thank you very much for choosing us. I find it very important for you to meet our entrepreneurs and investors in the environment of the Information Commercialization Center and to have an in-depth look at the activities carried out here. In particular, you will be able to experience the transformation, which is the theme of today’s meeting, firsthand. In this context, I congratulate the magazine team.”

“DIGITALIZATION IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY AND POSSIBILITY”

Speaking during the opening speeches, Erkan Gürkan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Competition Research Association (URAK), spoke about the ‘Don’t Underestimate Me’ project they are carrying out as follows; “Digital transformation is one of the most important works of Turkey and the world. I actually have a few hats as titles. One of them is the ‘Don’t Underestimate Me’ project. Another hat is URAK. In fact, the subject discussed today overlaps with both structures. In order for a society to develop, become rich and become equipped as a productive society, the lowest and highest values need to meet. In other words, there is a need for the intellectual knowledge above to merge with the ancient culture below. The ‘Don’t Underestimate Me’ project also aims to reveal the ‘I exist’ identity of each individual who says ‘I exist and I add value to this country’. It carries out its work in this vein.”

Producer and director İsrafil Kuralay

Emphasizing that he was also present at the first presentation of the magazine, Producer and director İsrafil Kuralay started his speech by saying the following about digitalization; I had the opportunity to work during the establishment phase of the Information Commercialization Center. While I was the Vice President of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, we had the opportunity to organize events here from time to time. I joined you today as a producer and director. I wholeheartedly congratulate Türkiye’de İş Dünyası magazine, which has reached its 14th issue. I was also present at the first presentation of the magazine. Today, the magazine will discuss the important topic of digital economy. While digitalization creates its own economy, a new area has opened up thanks to the digitalization of traditional economies. I think digitalization is a great opportunity and possibility. In this sense, the Information Commercialization Center is an exemplary organization for the world.

E-COMMERCE WILL GROW AS FAST THIS YEAR AS DURING THE PANDEMIC

Moderating the panel titled “From E-commerce and E-export to E-life”, Türkiye Newspaper Economy Director Canan Eraslan moderated Vartabi General Manager Gonca Soyluoğlu, E-star Global General Manager Sadem Pehlivan, Hepsiburada Commercial Group President Murat Büyüz, Envoyo COO İpek Güler and Tempo BPO CEO Taylan Akalın on stage. The panel discussed very important issues regarding e-commerce and e-export and also addressed how these concepts have become a part of our lives.

Speaking on the subject, Gonca Soyluoğlu said the following; “E-commerce has gained serious growth with the pandemic. Even those who did not shop with e-commerce before have learned to do e-commerce with the pandemic. The figures for 2021 show that 76 percent of the 16-64 age group is shopping in e-commerce. Very serious figures, the world is already turning to digital, but the pandemic has accelerated this process a lot. We have covered the distance that we would have covered in 10 years very quickly in a period of 1 year with the pandemic. We can now do e-commerce in every field. Both we as service providers have this equipment and people who sell products with e-commerce. There was very serious growth last year. When the figures for the first 6 months were announced, the market that we said would not grow this much has still grown very seriously despite the pandemic not being over. The figure for the first 6 months is currently around 386 billion TL. There was nearly 3.5 billion order requests last year. The target for the first 6 months of this year is 2.3 billion TL. In other words, this shows that this year, a growth momentum at least as fast as during the pandemic will be achieved.”

Underlining that Turkey has shown very fast reflexes to the e-commerce channel Simple Wrestler; “We have a global e-commerce market of 3 million dollars by the end of 2022. This market is expected to reach 10 million dollars in three years. Our country showed very fast reflexes to e-commerce. We even went beyond fast delivery and started exporting to the world. The pie is very big and I believe that we, as a potential country, have very big shares to take from this pie. As Yıldız Holding, we established E-star Global. This company is a company that provides services completely specific to the e-commerce channel. We grew very quickly during the pandemic and reached serious turnover in a short time. In 2016, we said something was happening in the e-commerce channel. We are very strong in terms of convention, we have more than 300 brands, but we saw a gap in the e-commerce field. It was received very strangely in the sector. People had the approach of ‘are we going to buy chocolate from the internet’. We established this company right before the pandemic in 2019 and are present on all platforms in Turkey, including marketplaces. We also operate in the same way on our own GODİVA website. “We are trying to sell snacks and sensitive products in eight countries excluding Türkiye,” he said.

THE PANDEMIC CHANGED SHOPPING HABITS

Murat Büyümez, who emphasized that the pandemic changed shopping habits, said; “E-commerce increased significantly during the pandemic and this increase is still continuing. The pandemic changed the shopping habits of customers, but in fact it changed the habits of manufacturers, SMEs, tradesmen and popular brands. In other words, the transition to online was not only realized by customers, the business world also changed. The number of our employees increased threefold due to the impact of the pandemic.”

İpek Güler, who explained in the panel that they are e-export ambassadors and why they chose England as a location, spoke as follows; “We are an e-export ambassador. We chose England as our first target market. One of the biggest factors in choosing England was its special position. Another factor is the high rate of e-commerce usage. 8 out of every 10 people in England use e-commerce. In addition, there is a Free Trade Agreement with Turkey. This agreement provides Turkish brands with a serious advantage in terms of customs. Our current positioning is primarily Europe, then the USA. We are currently examining the African and Middle Eastern markets. There is a serious awareness of e-export in Turkey, especially with the recent initiatives of our state in this regard. At this point, we need to focus on SMEs. We also get our strength from knowing SMEs very well. We have had the opportunity to work with SMEs in different sectors for over 25 years. We are actually an intermediary platform and we are based on technology. We are a platform where companies can meet their needs from A to Z on this journey.”

Taylan Akalın, who stated that they are business partners with companies that have started their digital transformation journey, also spoke as follows; “We move forward with companies in their digital transformation journeys as a reliable, visionary and innovative business partner, and contribute to the country’s exports by offering digital transformation solutions to all companies, including our SMEs. As Tempo BPO, our aim is to enable our stakeholders to dream life-affirming dreams and create new ways for them to realize these dreams in light of our customer and information technology services that we offer with innovative approaches. When we look at the e-commerce side of the business, we support brands in an operational sense and serve as the voice of brands in the digital environment during their instant growth and shrinkage, as well as their daily operations. We also have a digital transformation office. In this digital transformation office, we support companies on e-export by completing their customer operations in the markets after they enter the markets. Like Envoyo, our target market is SMEs. We currently have 140 SMEs and we have started them in e-commerce.”
